I N T E R V I EW S H E E VA FA L L A H I PHOTOGRAPHY DANIEL THOMAS SMITH COVER INTERVIEW Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor on her childhood muse, backstage beauty secrets and why she’s striving for a greener future PHOEBE Sustainably
COVER INTERVIEW Since her breakthrough role as Daphne Bridgerton in the hit Netflix series, Phoebe Dynevor has risen to stardom, often gracing the red carpets of star-studded events and always immaculately dressed. Sat within touching distance (finally an interview that’s not virtual), the 27 year old is just as preened and elegant as her on-screen character – her striking strawberry-red hair, glowing skin and white tailored suit giving off what I can only describe as ‘real-life angel energy’. But away from the bright lights, Phoebe uses her platform to raise awareness through non-profit organisation work and more recently, as weDo/ Professional’s first ever advocate for positive change. I was intrigued to learn more.
COVER INTERVIEW “I think there’s a taboo around sustainability where you feel you have to do everything and lead a fully sustainable lifestyle,” she tells me. “I definitely try to be as sustainable as possible, but I think – and excuse the pun [laughs] – it’s not sustainable to try to be fully sustainable.” So, what steps does Phoebe take towards reducing her carbon footprint? “I do my bit by trying to cut down. I try to avoid using plastic and taking public transport, so I walk wherever possible. I also have a relatively plant-based diet,” she says. “We live in a world where we buy so much. It’s important to be aware of what and how much you’re purchasing. Less is more.” O N H E L P I N G T H E P L A N E T. . .
COVER INTERVIEW With a growing social media following of over three million, I couldn’t help but wonder whether this was the driving force behind her advocating for positive change. “I was never really ready to have a platform. It wasn’t like I suddenly woke up one day and said: ‘Oh God, I have a platform, so I have to do something,'” she humbly admits. “But over time, I’ve realised that having such a big following has encouraged me to post content that’s helpful to the environment and the causes I support. I try to use my platform in the best way I can: sometimes I have fun with it and sometimes I use it to spread awareness.” There’s no denying that Phoebe’s actions are commendable, so it’s unsurprising to hear that she’s part of a strong female generation. She fondly admits: “My mum or my grandma are my inspirations. I come from a family of very independent, brilliant women, so I’m very WE L I V E I N A WO R L D WH E R E WE B U Y S O M U C H . Recounting her earliest childhood memory, she says: “I remember watching my grandma apply lipstick or eyeshadow. She was very glamorous, and I loved watching her get ready.” “weDo/ is so great because a lot of the products are two-in-one, especially useful for someone like me who travels a lot.” “I love this multipurpose moisturiser. It’s so refreshing to know that what you’re putting in your hair and on your skin is not only sustainable, but also good for you.” “I think the plastic-free shampoo bar is amazing because it’s just so handy to travel with something that’s lightweight.” “I’m obsessed with the balm because you can use it everywhere, not just on your hair; I like to use it on my lips and skin too.” P H O E B E ’ S S U S TA I N A B L E S E C R E T S . . .
COVER INTERVIEW Speaking about her role in Bridgerton, Phoebe and her on-screen character Daphne share similarities. “We’re both quite empathetic,” she reveals. “I think you've got to be empathetic as an actor and what I love about Daphne is that she does really feel for people and likes to take care of those around her – I really admire that about her. I’d also say weirdly, our makeup routine is quite similar. We both like to keep it simple.” ON B E AU T Y A ND B R I D G E RTON. . .
COVER INTERVIEW But while it can take up to two hours to apply her wig on set, Phoebe’s daily ritual when off duty isn’t quite so high maintenance. “If I’m not working, I don’t usually wear makeup, so my routine is just a splash of water on my face, moisturiser and SPF – that's very important,” she says. “I also drink lots of water and of course, a coffee, because I’m a caffeine addict [laughs].” Her go-to makeup look rolls off the tongue in three words: “Simple, natural and easy.” Phoebe’s greatest lesson so far? “I’ve learned that it’s important to take care of yourself first and then you can take care of everything else around you.” I F I ’ M N O T WO R K I N G , I D O N ’ T U S U A L LY WE A R M A K E U P, S O M Y R O U T I N E I S J U S T A S P L A S H O F WAT E R O N M Y FA C E , MO I S T U R I S E R A N D S P F – T H AT ' S V E R Y I M P O R TA N T
Amid the ‘shroom boom’, we get to the root of why these funky fungi are making their way from our plates and into our skincare WO R D S A L I C E M A C FA R L A N E INGREDIENT FOCUS mushrooms magic t h e o f
The rising star in skincare, dubbed ‘the new CBD’* (thanks to its multifaceted health benefits), mushroom is the latest ingredient that goes far beyond the realms of your local supermarket. But according to Dr Christopher Hobbs, mushroom expert and author of awardwinning book Christopher Hobbs’s Medicinal Mushrooms, The Essential Guide, the magic of mushrooms has been hailed for centuries. “In Asia and Europe, the medicinal effects of mushrooms were documented from about 2,000 years ago,” he explains. “For cosmetic and skin healing purposes, medicinal fungi are talked about through the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Several species have research behind them for relieving inflammation of the skin from burns and irritation, allergic reactions, for speeding healing of wounds, lightening skin in areas of hyperpigmentation and even fading ageing spots.” CCommonly referred to as adaptogens, their stress-soothing properties have *Source: ‘Beauty’s Mushroom Boom’, Stylus, February 2022 INGREDIENT FOCUS
propelled them to fame. “An adaptogen is a mushroom or herb that can help the body resist the harmful effects of stress,” says Dr Hobbs. “They also maintain homeostasis [normal and healthy metabolic functions] by regulating activity of the hormonal, nervous and immune systems. They can be used during times of stress, lowered immune response chronic inflammation, travel, or when busy work schedules may be pushing us too hard.” And the benefits don’t end there. “A massive amount of research shows that regular use of mushrooms high in betaglucans [an ingredient that works to 1 2 1/ PURITO Centella Unscented Recovery Cream 50ml / £21.30 2/ REN CLEAN SKINCARE Evercalm Redness Relief Serum 30ml / £45 INGREDIENT FOCUS

Which mushroom species should we look for in our beauty regimes? “I recommend Reishi foremost,” says Dr Hobbs. “I use it daily as it has a positive effect on the mood, energy, sleep, and overall health. Turkey Tail is the highest in beta-glucans. Regular use can protect us against infections, according to many studies.” With a host of benefits like these, it seems mushrooms truly are magic after all. 3 4 3/ IT COSMETICS Bye Bye Redness Calming Moisturiser 56.7g / £40 4/ RODIAL White Crystal Drops 30g / £55 *Source: Vetvicka V, Vannucci L, Sima P, Richter J. Not only crucial to gut health, prebiotics are also leading the way to happy, healthier hair and scalps WO R D S S H E E VA FA L L A H I PREBIOTIC POWER HAIRCARE
International trichologist Mark Blake says: “Nutrition and haircare has never been so high on the consumer’s list of concerns. Our hair grows out of what we eat or retain in our body, so you are literally conditioning your hair from inside the body if you have a healthy diet. It’s always easier to grow healthy hair rather than try and improve the condition after you have grown it.” Now, hair and scalp products are taking innovation from skincare, being formulated with prebiotics to support hair growth and balance the scalp microbiome to minimise the need for washing. *‘The Bacteria Beauty Boom’, Stylus, August 2020. With haircare regimes going beyond the realms of just shampoo and conditioner, many are introducing additional steps – including priming, masking and cleansing – to improve not only hair health, but also the scalp. Research has shown that 40% of Americans* believe the skin could benefit from a healthy balance of good and bad bacteria, placing microbiome at the forefront. HAIRCARE
But which prebiotics should we look for in haircare? “Inulin is a favoured prebiotic that helps protect the microbiome of the scalp,” Mark explains. “A good source of friendly bacteria and yeast on the scalp can help counteract the growth of unfriendly bacteria. If the balance of the scalp is thrown out, this can lead to problems such as excoriation, irritation, erythema and flaking of the scalp.” Fermented rice water is another ingredient known to have a great effect on our hair, according to Marie Drago, CEO and founder of Gallinée. “The bacteria that ferment the rice water “A good source of friendly bacteria and yeast on the scalp can help counteract the growth of unfriendly bacteria” POWERHOUSE PREBIOTICS 1/ GALLINÉE Prebiotic Scalp and Hair Serum 100ml / £26 2/ GROW GORGEOUS Prebiotic and AHA 5% Booster 30ml / £25 HAIRCARE 2 1

Priming can also stop your hair breaking when it is put under pressure from heat styling or even combing.” Marie believes that prebiotics should form the base of all good haircare routines. *‘Elevating Home Fragrance Experiences’, March 2022, Stylus Ever revisited an old fragrance and instantly been reminded of your first night out? Or perhaps you’re transported to tropical climes whenever you smell your signature holiday scent? You’re not alone. In a recent report* published by Stylus, elevated scent offerings are allowing us to establish more meaningful connections to fragrances, particularly when it comes to personal memories. According to Ana Rita Heliodoro, fragrance education executive for L’Oreal Luxe UK & Ireland: “A fragrance is a universe; it has the power to transport you to different memories and places.” But the connection between fragrance and memory holds a lot more than meets the nose. In fact, there’s a scientific link between the olfactory system (sense of smell) and our brain. “Our nose and brain work together for our safety,” says Ana. “Every new smell is perceived as something dangerous, and our nose sends a message to our brain FRAGRANCE
to alert it to this new unknown scent. After our brain perceives a smell as ‘safe’ it keeps it in memory, almost like a scent library,” she explains. “So, whenever we smell a fragrance, most of the ingredients are already familiar to us. This induces a reaction which most of the time is a happy and joyful feeling of familiarity and wellbeing.” 1/ JO MALONE LONDON Honeysuckle and Davana Cologne 100ml / £108 “A fragrance is a universe; it has the power to transport you to different memories and places” FRAGRANCE
Since the COVID-19 pandemic placed travel abroad on hold, many found solace in scents for the body and home that created mood-transforming sensory experiences. “During the lockdown period, customers discovered that they could escape their homes by smelling a specific fragrance,” Ana adds. “With just one spray, suddenly they were in the sunny Mediterranean and not at home.” Now, fragrance houses such as Maison Margiela, Akro and Floral Street are working with 2/ TOM FORD Eau de Soleil Eau de Toilette Spray 100ml / £130 3/ AKRO HAZE Eau de Parfum 100ml / £140 FRAGRANCE

BEAUTIFY F E S T I V A L F E V E R WO R D S A L I C E M A C FA R L A N E Festival season is back! This ultimate guide will ensure you stand out in the crowd
BEAUTIFY Festivals can often be fun for everyone except your skin. “The sunscreen, sweat, makeup and lack of washing facilities can definitely make skin break out following a festival weekend,” says Dr Fiona Worsnop, consultant dermatologist at Stratum Clinics. “Reusable cleansing wipes are a goto. After cleansing, remove impurities using a chemical exfoliant followed by a non-comedogenic (or nonspot-forming) moisturiser.” You might just about get away with skimping on your double cleanse, but there’s one step you can’t compromise on. “Sunscreen is absolutely vital when attending a festival. Long hours with no cover from the sun is a recipe for sun damage disaster. Apply an SPF 50+ sunscreen at least every two hours.” Dr Worsnop’s advice for keeping afterparty-induced eye bags at bay? “Anything cooling for ten minutes will instantly wake up tired eyes; think cucumber, an ice mask in your drinks cooler or even just some clean ice cubes. Applying a hydrating eye balm to the eyelids when you do manage to catch a few Zs will also be helpful!” Grab your sunnies as festivals are making a comeback. BEAUTIFY Glowing skin is in – according to celebrity makeup artist Roseanna Velin (@roseannavelin). “We’re going to see lots of fresh, dewy skin, with golden shimmery highlights adding a gentle glowy dimension,” she explains. “Eyes will be colourful neon tones, with graphic eyeliner and block colour eyeshadows.” But how can you keep your look in place all day long? “Using the right foundation for your skin type is essential,” says Roseanna. “If you have oily skin, go for a matte finish foundation and set it well with powder. For drier skin, use a dewier foundation. When it comes to eyeshadow, choose good quality pigments and use an eyeshadow base underneath to make it stick. When Alice Liveing appears on screen, her skin is fresh and radiant, sporting a post-holiday glow from her trip to the Middle East – which you’ll know if you’re one of her 600K Instagram followers. But a healthy dose of vitamin D doesn’t paint the full picture of Alice’s enviable complexion. In fact, 29-year-old Alice has openly shared her skincare struggles. “I’ve had acne since I was about 16, but it was January of this year when I started to feel like my skin was holding me back, even from going to the shops,” she tells me. “I felt like I was doing all the things that were supposed to be ‘right’ for your skin. I drink lots of water, exercise, sleep well, eat well, have a good skincare routine. And yet I was struggling.” Skin expert and medical director Dr Ifeoma Ejikeme explains: “Acne can be triggered by many things, including fluctuations in hormones, skin irritation, over-exfoliation or infrequent cleansing.” INTERVIEW
Alice’s confidence often took a turn for the worse during her flare-ups. “I work in the health and fitness industry, so people expect you to have clear skin, gorgeous hair, all that sort of stuff. I felt almost like a fraud because I don’t have that.” After years of trying off-theEUCERIN DermoPURIFYER Cleansing Gel 200ml / £9.50 shelf solutions, she decided to start Roaccutane, a high-strength acne treatment that can only be prescribed by your GP. Dr Ifeoma says: “Roaccutane SUPER FACIALIST Salicylic Acid Anti Blemish Purify & Refresh Facial Scrub 150ml / £9 works by reducing sebum production in the skin.” If not monitored efficiently, Dr Ifeoma warns of the side effects: from common extreme skin dryness and SKIN SOOTHERS “I was doing all the things that were supposed to be ‘right’ for your skin. I got one spot on holiday and I was like: ‘Oh my God, I’ve got a spot!’” she laughs. Despite her promising Roaccutane journey, Alice candidly documents the highs and lows. “Roaccutane pulls the moisture out of the body. That’s one of the most common side effects and the only one I’ve experienced.” Since sharing her skin story, Alice has ditched the filters for good. “If I start to only like my face when it has a filter on it, how am I going to accept it when it’s how it is naturally? I’m just grateful that we’re existing in a world where there are people who are dropping filters and showing the real them.” It’s advice we can all benefit from hearing. BLEMISH BUSTERS INTERVIEW
T H A T T I M E O F T H E WO R D S H O L LY J A M E S For Women’s HealthWeek, we shine a spotlight on Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder and why it’s a lot more than ‘just that time of the month’ INSIDE OUT
Whether it’s a hormone-induced breakout, a bloated belly or sugary cravings, most women are familiar with the signs that signal the start of their period. However, for some, this time of the month brings with it much more than meets the eye. Thought to affect around one in 20 menstruators*, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) “is a cyclical reproductive mood disorder that arises during the luteal phase (the time between ovulation and your next period) of the cycle, with symptoms showing ten to 14 days before menstruation begins,” explains Jes Hagan, period educator and integrative menstrual health coach. Though still unconfirmed, “PMDD is believed to be caused by a sensitivity to the natural fall of oestrogen and rise of progesterone after ovulation,” says Jes. Despite not being a hormonal imbalance, it can bring with it psychological and physical symptoms – something that Phoebe Williams, founder of The PMDD Project, experiences regularly. “My main symptoms are anxiety, extreme irritability, insomnia, * The Recovery Village, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder Statistics, April, 2021. I also experience depression and low self-esteem,” she tells us. “It’s always prior to my period starting, and the symptoms completely disappear as soon as I begin bleeding. It almost feels like two personalities.” Unlike premenstrual syndrome (PMS) – referred to as a less severe form of PMDD – PMDD can’t be eradicated with diet, lifestyle or medicine and “it can be difficult or impossible to function as normal,” admits Clare-Louise Knox, business psychologist and founder of Luna Hub. “The PMDD community is amazing. Having a safe space and support from people who get it makes such a difference!” “Basic self-care like getting ready, eating, drinking enough water, can all go out of the window. We are thrown into survival mode.” It can also affect relationships and the ability to work. “I have to plan things around the luteal phase,” adds Phoebe. Though she’s grateful to have friends and family who are patient and understanding, Phoebe reveals that she had to explain to those around her, including her GP, what PMDD was. “Before I started The PMDD Project, I’d never come across anyone who had heard of PMDD.” Only added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 2013, Clare says: “PMDD is relatively unknown in the medical community and can often be minimised as ‘just PMS’. It can also be misdiagnosed as different mental health conditions. Currently, there are no blood or saliva tests to diagnose PMDD – it comes down to symptom tracking and the luck of the draw if you have a GP who is familiar with PMDD.” INSIDE OUT

In regards to managing her PMDD, Phoebe takes antidepressants and beta-blockers, as well as regular exercise. “I’ve cut out caffeine and don’t drink alcohol when I’m in the luteal phase, as these both just make my symptoms ten times worse.” Clare also stresses the importance of seeking help. “Having PMDD is horrible, but the PMDD community is amazing. Having a judgementfree safe space where you can vent, offload and get guidance and support from people who get it, makes such a difference!” INSIDE OUT

INFERTILITY U N Z I P P E D To mark Infertility Awareness Month, two men share their personal experiences on the road to self-acceptance and conception WORDS HOL LY JAME S LF LOCKER ROOM
LF LOCKER ROOM With information surrounding female fertility seemingly more accessible, trouble conceiving among men seems to be kept zipped, despite “male infertility being the main issue for one in three couples trying to get pregnant,” according to Dr Chris George, general practitioner and media doctor. “The main cause of male infertility is poorquality semen,” says Dr Chris. This can be due to a “lack of sperm, sperm that doesn’t move properly, abnormal sperm or in a small number of cases, an underlying medical condition,” he explains. Warning signs include: struggling to conceive after a year of regular intercourse, as well as “problems with sexual function, pain, swelling or a lump around the testicles, abnormal breast tissue (gynaecomastia), recurrent chest infections and reduced facial hair.” He explains: “Male infertility is diagnosed following medical history, examination and further tests.” For Ryan Bregante, founder of Living With XXY, infertility came as a complication of Klinefelter syndrome, a rare condition where he was born with an extra X chromosome.
LF LOCKER ROOM Despite the condition, Ryan maintained a positive outlook. “In my early twenties, some of my confidence came from knowing I couldn’t have kids. However, other dates ended the moment they’d say: ‘I want biological kids,’” he admits. But for Toby Trice, champion racing driver and ambassador for Fertility Network UK, his infertility experience was quite “There were days feeling low and depressed where it just stripped us of all happiness and motivation” different. He was diagnosed with varicocele, an enlargement of the veins around the testicles, and struggled to conceive a child with his long-term partner. “It was after two rounds of IVF and various other treatments that the focus switched to me,” reveals Toby. “I felt frustrated that it was only now I was discovering what was going on. There were days feeling low and depressed where it just stripped us of all happiness and motivation.” “Male infertility can have a big impact on mental health,” explains Dr Chris. “Fertility issues can leave Toby Trice Ryan Bregante

Luckily for Toby, his cloud came with a silver lining. Raising awareness around varicocele enabled him to receive the correct treatment, resulting in the birth of his son Oliver, who was born in December last year. Toby encourages other men dealing with infertility to not only seek support from friends, but also to get tested, revealing: “If I didn’t have these tests done, I would still be childless.”
