“It’s important to teach young boys, and older men, that it’s okay to say you’re not okay” LF LOCKER ROOM But the influencer admits that the bravado of the fitness industry can pose challenges for mental wellbeing: “Men struggle with this notion that to be a man they have to be “strong” and can’t talk about [their] emotions. But these men crumble inside. It’s important to teach young boys, and older men, that it’s okay to say you’re not okay.” Stephen explains: “Some men feel that seeking help is a sign of weakness. Research conducted by Mind in 2019 shows that for 10% of men, the fear of being told they were mentally ill would be in their top three reasons to stop them seeking help.” James recognises the importance of a support network: “Men isolate themselves,” he says. “So many people say we need to talk about [mental health] more, but they need to take action. It’s a brave thing to do, but I think there’s strength in vulnerability.” Stephen concurs: “Often small, everyday actions can make the biggest difference. Don’t be afraid to ask how people are. By sharing experiences, we can challenge stigma and help others feel less alone.”
